Evidence-based instruction has become a popular te Evidence-based instruction has become a popular term in education, particular in light of the science of reading boom.  However, evidence-based instruction is not the same as evidence-driven instruction, and it is important for parents and educators to understand the difference.Instruction coined as evidence-based has been demonstrated by large-scale research studies to produce statistically significant outcomes for large numbers of students.  These methods are then generally applied in the classroom, and may improve outcomes for some students but not others. Why?Large-scale studies factor out important sources of variance across students.  However, variability is the very nature of human learning!  All students present with different prerequisite skill strengths and weaknesses which should guide the design of instruction.  When a method is generally applied to all students, these individual differences are often ignored. Evidence-driven instruction involves not only implementing methods supported by science but also collecting ongoing evidence with every student as an individual.  Instruction is continually modified based on the ongoing measures collected with every student.  As a result, every student achieves measurable outcomes, and no one falls through the cracks. One general method will never produce effective outcomes with every learner.
